The Transmissions

Performance Upgrades

At Black Shepherd Auto, we use only quality parts brands like Raybestos, Borg-Warner, Koyo, Motorcraft, and Sonnax in our builds.  Our valve, clutch pack clearance, and spring stiffness modifications provide a factory-like shift feel for our Daily/Tow unit, up to what we believe is the best compromise between a factory-like shift feel and the quickness required by higher horsepower loads to keep slippage and oil temps as low as possible in the Street and Super Street units.


All of our builds are 100% streetable and retain the factory TCC lockup mode.  Everything we do here is to increase longevity and reliability, regardless of the horsepower rating.  Internals are finish-machined during assembly to ensure our custom clearance requirements are met in every single unit.  This is the ONLY way to have total control of the clearances due to every assembly having unique dimensional stackups.


All units are available in 2wd or 4wd configurations, 4r100 or E4OD, same price.   Units built for v10 engines will retain their factory aluminum planet carriers.  There is no option to upgrade aluminum planet carriers to steel.

This is our most popular unit.  This transmission is great for a daily driver, plowing, towing, working trucks, and anyone who just wants a reliable unit that will outlast any stock or factory build.  This transmission will shift like new, but will have a tremendous increase in reliability, longevity, and power handling. 

This unit includes the following:

  • New premium frictions and components.
  • Custom clearancing throughout after initial blueprinting.
  • Machine work to embed snaprings so they will not pop out.
  • Machined Forward, Coast and Direct assemblies to allow for additional full-thickness frictions and steels.
  • A zero-clearance center support stack for maximum stability.
  • Hydraulic modifications to increase holding power and reduce slippage.
  • A factory-like shift feel with vacuum tested valves.
  • Includes a triple clutch torque converter with stamped cover.
  • Will handle stock engines all the way up to 450hp.  
  • Available for 7.3 and 6.8 powered trucks.

Street (600hp) $5,400

The Street unit includes the following:

  • New premium frictions and components.
  • Custom clearancing throughout after initial blueprinting.
  • Machine work to embed snaprings so they will not pop out.
  • Machined Forward, Coast and Direct assemblies to allow for additional full-thickness frictions and steels.
  • Additional machine work for additional full-thickness frictions and steels in other packs.
  • A zero-clearance center support stack for maximum stability.
  • High strength steel internals in failure areas.
  • Fully modified control bodies for quicker shifts.
  • Hydraulic modifications to increase holding power and reduce slippage.
  • A slightly quicker shift feel with vacuum tested valves.
  • Includes a triple clutch torque converter with billet cover.
  • Will handle stock engines all the way up to 600hp.  
  • Available for 7.3 trucks only.

Super Street (750hp) $6,400

The Super Street unit includes the following:

  • New premium frictions and components.
  • Custom clearancing throughout after initial blueprinting.
  • Machine work to embed snaprings so they will not pop out.
  • Machine work to allow for an additional full-thickness friction and steel in all six clutch packs.
  • A zero-clearance center support stack for maximum stability.
  • Other stability, strengthening and lubrication mods.
  • Additional test ports.
  • More high strength steel internals in failure areas.
  • Fully modified control bodies for quicker shifts.
  • Hydraulic modifications to increase holding power and reduce slippage.
  • A stiffer and quicker shift feel.
  • Includes a custom billet torque converter.
  • Will handle stock engines all the way up to 750hp.  
  • Available for 7.3 trucks only.

Torque Converters

Each of the units includes a specific torque converter custom built to match the performance level of the transmission.  These are NOT mass-produced eBay torque converters, they are expertly hand-built the same way we build the transmissions.  

Just as with the transmissions, an acceptable core is required with purchase.
